Start your new year off right by learning to eat like a nutrition expert! By downloading one of these food journal apps you can learn what you’re eating and how much is too much.
I’ve never really been able to count my calories without recording everything. It’s impossible to remember it all, especially if you’re like me and nibble all day. So journalling your food intake is a MANDATORY habit in losing weight.
You’ll need to have one downloaded and play with it a little before the big Start day.
I’ve chosen the top three apps, which are all free, and explained why they’re awesome.
- My Fitness Pal
This is the app I’ve used for a couple of years. It can be used with smart phones, tablets and computers. It can sync with all your devices.
You can save meals in case you always eat the same breakfast or snack. But when you eat out it has a gigantic list of fast foods and restaurants meals. It also can be tweaked from a computer to set your nutrition goals, say for fiber grams or a percentage of protein, carbs and fats (that’s macros). There’s a bar code reader to take a pic of store bought food to get immediate stats. Plus there’s an area to add in cardio.
It’s extremely easy to use, notifies you if you’ve forgotten to record that days intake, and has a blog for community support.
- Lose it!
I used Lose it! before I switched to My Fitness Pal. It does much the same but I couldn’t find as many food choices. It has the bar code, you can save recipes and share with friends. You can also add in your workout expenditures.
This one’s really cool, too! Lots of food and exercise tracking. The app syncs on your devices. You can set your target weight and it will set up a balanced nutrition/diet plan for you which is awesome. There’s also stuff like syncing with Fitbit or Jawbone. It has a thing called “Food Score” which will tell you how healthy a particular food is.
My fav is My Fitness Pal, just because I’m used to it. They all seem to have basically the same features.
The important thing is to install one now. Get used to it! Put it on all your devices. With an app like one of these you can eat like a champion!
Do you have a better food app you prefer? Or will you use one of these? Tell me your choice and why in the comment section below.
